Prime Numbers!
Tissue Tally
We are going to be doing a lot of data collection and data representation this year. How cool is that?
I got this idea from one of my fellow teachers at the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy this summer.
We go through a LOT of tissues in a school year. I wondered, exactly how many boxes DO we go through?
As we began discussing the possibilities, it became apparent that figuring out how many TISSUES we go through would be a lot more interesting to think about than just how many boxes we use up.
- We would only count one at a time if we did boxes
- Tissue boxes contain vastly different amounts of tissues (it’s VARIABLE).
So we made predictions about how many tissues we will go through during the year. We used our background knowledge to make our predictions.
After we made our predictions, we talked about some other kinds of variables (like how we may use more tissues during the winter season due to colds and flu).
We will revisit our predictions several times this year. We will also keep a running tally of the actual number of tissues used, and see how our predictions measure up!

The Walking Classroom!
I am absolutely THRILLED to announce that our class has been selected to receive a donated set of Walking Classroom materials!
Read about this wonderful program HERE
Through the generosity of sponsors, we will be getting a classroom set of MP3 players loaded with specially made Grade 5 Common Core English Language Arts podcasts.
What will we do with these amazing materials?
We will WALK! And LISTEN! Every day!
Numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of combining physical activities with academic studies. Here are some studies from The Walking Classroom’s website:
My goal for this program is to give students the opportunity to get out, move around, and provide additional materials to students with various learning styles. I think we all can benefit from the fresh air, exercise and innovation this program will provide.
I feel the program will be motivational and FUN! Our kids are already “plugged in”, and the class is very excited to get started!
I will be keeping you updated with our progress!
